The California State Parks system is deep into a financial crisis. This fiscal year more than $30 million dollars has been eliminated from the budget for parks, $14.2 million from the General Fund. The California State Parks department has instituted deep services cuts in the vast majority of the system's 278 parks. Many parks are closed part of the week, or seasonally. Most routine maintenance has been cut back. California State Parks Director Ruth Coleman will discuss the approaches the agency is taking to protecting public access to parks, and what they are able to do to protect the natural and cultural resources within parks. Elizabeth Goldstein, the President of the California State Parks Foundation, an independent non-profit dedicated to protecting, enhancing and advocating for state parks, will speak to short and long term options for funding state parks.
