Celebrate the SF Ballet’s Nutcracker
Asian Art Museum Book Nook: Author Reading and Demonstration Friday, December 9
7:00 p.m.
San Francisco Opera House
301 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco Map
Registration is closed.

HCSF and the University of Chicago Club of San Francisco celebrate a Gala Family Night production of the San Francisco Ballet’s The Nutcracker again this season. The Ballet brings the beauty and wonderment of Clara’s Christmas dream to life with choreography by Helgi Tomasson; scenery by internationally recognized designer Michael Yeargan, who recently won a Tony for his production of the Broadway smash Light in the Piazza; costumes by Tony award-winning designer Martin Pakledinaz and lighting by acclaimed designer James F. Ingalls. Join us in The Nutcracker fantasyland to enjoy this elegant San Francisco tradition.

Once again, snow will be falling as guests arrive on the Opera House steps. A Sugar Plum Fairy world of holiday magic and costumed characters awaits inside the resplendent lobby, magically transformed into a wonderland of super-sized candycanes, teddy bears, tin soldiers, and such things that are usually visible only to young people nodding off to sleep. Our guests will enjoy special treats offered only on Family Night, including a gift of a plush stuffed toy animal for the first 500 children arriving, milk and cookies during intermission and plenty of photo opportunities with larger-than-life characters. No-host champagne and other beverages are available during intermission.

Come with us to recreate this fantastic, brilliant dream of the holidays and Christmas Eve past and future that lingers in the imagination of children of all ages. Pre-performance snow effects begin at around 6:00. The Nutcracker begins at 7 p.m. We must be seated about 6:50 p.m.

We will send another e-mail notice closer to the event about a potential meet-and-greet place prior to the performance, either in the lobby or in a designated area.

We reserved great orchestra seating eight months early. Tickets are $65.00 per person and may be purchased by clicking on the Paypal button above, by calling the HCSF office at (415) 621-3900 to pay by credit card, or by mailing a check payable to "Harvard Club of San Francisco" to our office. Don’t miss an exceptional Technology Roundtable event on November 17th at 6:30pm with the first investor and General Manager US for Skype, Howard Hartenbaum and Stuart Henshall, Skype evangelist.

From its origins, Skype has been one of the most visible and controversial start-ups, offering free phone calls over the internet, leading the charge in the adoption of VoIP by consumers worldwide and heavily disrupting the telephony industry. Skype’s announced acquisition by Ebay for $4 billion on September 12th 2005 has again left the technology world scratching its head, this time wondering how and whether Ebay will leverage its new acquisition to generate value worth a multiple of its investment. Hyped deal or the next big thing in telephony? Come hear a fascinating debate around one of the start-ups and deals of this year.

This event will be moderated by Justin Hibbard, journalist at BusinessWeek.

Schedule:
6:00 p.m. Reception
6:30-7:15 p.m. remarks from Dean Walt
7:15-7:45 p.m. Q&A

"In this elegant and provocative new book, Kennedy School professor and renowned scholar Stephen M. Walt analyzes the different strategies that states employ to counter U.S. power or to harness it for their own ends. These responses threaten America’s ability to achieve its foreign policy goals and may eventually undermine its dominant position. To prevent this, Walt argues, the United States must adopt a foreign policy that other states welcome, rather than one that reinforces their fear of American power." – W.W. Norton and Company

Stephen M. Walt is the academic dean and Robert and Renée Belfer Professor of International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Co-Editor of the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs. He is the author of The Origins of Alliances, which received the 1988 Edgar S. Moroccan musicians, playing live for these performances, fuse the drumming of Gnawa ceremonies with the plaintive tones of oud (lute) and violin, while the haunting voices of women singing devotional and love songs echo their rich timbres. These intricate musical layers give the dancers of LINES Ballet a rhythmic landscape in which they explore the nuances of community, harmony and unexpected moments of beauty." Design Innovation: Fast Becoming a Must-Have Competency for Competitive Strategy
Wednesday, October 5th
6:00 to 9:00 pm
$30.00
Location: SAP Labs
3410 Hillview Ave. Palo Alto

The July 4th issue of Business Week reported: "When people talked about innovation in the '90s, they invariably meant technology. When people speak about innovation today, it is more than likely they mean design. Design is fast becoming a must-have competency for corporations. It has evolved from a simple way of giving form and color to products into a powerful tool for "C" suite executives. Design methods get managers close to their customers, design research helps top execs visualize the future, and design strategies help companies innovate."

So how do technology executives create "good design"? Well, good design is more than style - as style is too trend-driven. Good design appeals to customers. It is easy to use and how-to-use it is obvious. Good design is manufacturable, and it may even be patentable. The tools of design research, such as consumer observation and fast prototyping, can challenge conventional wisdom and promote innovation.

HBSTech has selected five design expert-stakeholders to discuss how to "win with design”. For more details and to register, visit www.hbstech.org

HBS Tech
HBSTech launched in 2004 and is open to all Harvard alumni. HBSTech is a 501(c)(3) non-profit alumni association chartered from Harvard Business School, dedicated to broadly serving the needs of HBS alumni interested in technology and innovation.

Opera Essentials
Opera Singer Wednesday, September 14
5:30 p.m.
One Market St., Steuart Tower, 27th Floor, S.F. directions

Does opera seem overwhelming, maybe intimidating? It can be! Does a woman wearing a helmet with horns, carrying a spear, and screeching send you in the other direction? Why wouldn't it? Does a death scene have to take a half-hour? Sometimes! But, not all opera is created equally.

Join in this educational and fun (yes, fun!) musical journey to learn by seeing and hearing the essentials of opera. The session includes a brief history of opera, an overview of the operatic voice, an introduction to famous repertoire, and some basic operatic vocabulary to demystify this complex, yet beautiful art form. Several video clips will be shown to ground the discussion in actual performance footage.

Instructor James Sokol has worked in the opera world for the past two decades after having begun his career under Beverly Sills at New York City Opera. He is a Founding Member of The Singers Development Foundation, a Manhattan-based not-for-profit which offers study grants to developing opera singers. He has worked on projects with Cincinnati Opera as well as with the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Locally, Sokol has worked in several roles at San Francisco Opera and is a former executive director of San Francisco's Pocket Opera. He teaches a wide variety of opera appreciation courses in San Francisco, Walnut Creek, Marin and Sonoma.

This event will take place in the law offices of Kaye and Moser LLP. Light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited.

Payment:
Pay via PayPal by clicking above or personal check sent to Club Office. Payment must be received prior to event. No refunds given after September 7.

Presented by Mystic Bison Theatre & Dance
The Next Stage Theater
1620 Gough Street, San Francisco

Mystic Bison Theatre & Dance presents live performances of this American classic with George as a minority to heighten the drama. Having made the steep climb to become an Associate Professor of History without full tenure during the Kennedy Administration, George now must face the tragedy of having fallen in love with the wrong woman. His Caucasian wife Martha is the daughter of the President of New Carthage (New Haven?) University, his boss. Having given up on George's fortunes during a time when a woman's identity is derived from her husband's success, she openly longs for blonde lovers and blonde sons. This fractious middle-aged interracial couple of George and Martha confronts the seemingly content young blonde couple of Nick, the genetic engineer, and Honey during a drunken late-night party only to reveal the lies underpinning both marriages. In the end, each couple is left with only the truth and their love.

Harvard alum Mark R. Carter, Ph.D. produces and stars as George in this production.

Come join us for an unforgettable search as we discover hidden San Francisco together, solve a series of challenging brain-teasers, and work in teams to build camaraderie among our members.

Under the expert guidance of Jayson Wechter, Private Eye, and the creator of the original Chinese New Year Treasure Hunt, we will comb the most historic sections of our town in a journey of discovery that will give even the most knowledgeable San Franciscan a new appreciation of one of the nation’s most fabled cities. Treasure hunters will explore narrow Chinatown alleys where the sound of clacking mahjong tiles fill the air, climb hidden stairways to find breathtaking bay views, find the site where Humphrey Bogart hid out with Lauren Bacall, and the spot where his partner was gunned down in The Maltese Falcon. See where Barbary Coast hoodlums were hanged by vigilantes, the distillery that San Franciscans refused to give up on while their whole city burned to the ground, and much more.

Harvard alums will have the chance to demonstrate their mystery-solving prowess in competitive teams in a race against time — and against one another. The areas to be explored will be Chinatown, North Beach and Telegraph Hill; the time will be 4:00 p.m. sharp on Saturday, July 23. We will meet in front of Ben Franklin in Washington Square Park in the heart of North Beach, where we will form our teams, receive a set of mysterious clues, and set out on our adventure.

We promise a never-to-be-forgotten day of excitement, enlightenment, great fun, and new friendships forged. We urge all our members, young and not-so-young, to take advantage of this special opportunity as we are led by Jayson, the master of the largest and most famous adventure of its type in the country. Especially arranged for the HCSF, the cost will be only $35 per member or guest, representing a 30% discount over regular rates.

A Private Concert with The Anton Schwartz Trio
Anton Schwartz Saturday, July 16
Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Concert begins at 8:00 p.m.
3240 Peralta St. #2, Oakland

Don't miss this opportunity to attend a private concert with Harvard alum and jazz saxophonist Anton Schwartz, performing with two special guests! Anton is opening up his live/work space just for us, so get ready for an evening of world-class jazz in an intimate, casual setting.

Trio:
Anton Schwartz (AB '89), tenor sax
Taylor Eigsti, piano
Joshua Thurston-Milgrom, acoustic bass

Jazz saxophonist Anton Schwartz has won over listeners and critics at high-profile jazz venues across the country, including the Blue Note in New York, Washington D.C.'s Blues Alley and the Monterey Jazz Festival. His frequent appearances at Yoshi's in Oakland draw sellout crowds, and each of his three CDs has earned sterling reviews and strong air play. Billboard Magazine writes, "Schwartz savors the implications of each note, allowing the listener to delight in the endless melodies created by his stirring improvisations." Anton's first CD, When Music Calls (1998), inspired the San Francisco Bay Guardian to report, "Anton Schwartz has everything you want to hear in a modern jazz saxophonist — an appealing, consistent tone, an abundance of ideas fueling both his compositions and his improvisations, and superb taste in musical collaborators."

Without a doubt, Taylor Eigsti is one of the most remarkable jazz musicians of our time. Billboard Magazine calls the 20-year-old pianist "a composer/player who’s going to have a major-league jazz career." Downbeat Magazine and the All Music Guide both awarded Eigsti's most recent album with four stars, noting the pianist's sophisticated composing and arranging style. A native of Menlo Park, he now calls L.A. his home, though he tours regularly around the nation. Taylor has recently been signed by the most infamous "star maker" in the jazz world, Mary Ann Topper, who is responsible for launching the careers of Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Christian McBride, Jane Monheit, and Peter Cincotti.

Originally from Palo Alto, Joshua Thurston-Milgrom now lives in Chicago, where he is an important member of the jazz scene. We are lucky to catch him while he is passing through town. Joshua is also a faculty member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop, where he first crossed paths with Anton and Taylor.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with music starting at 8:00 p.m. and a half-hour intermission midway. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
