We have had a great 2007 start for the new Harvard Angels seed/early stage angel investor group and we are ending the year with 3 final presenting companies followed by a beer and wine holiday mixer. Come see some great companies present, and just as important, meet and mix with your HBSA/NC and Harvard SF Club alumni interested in angel investing in early stage ventures. This new group meets quarterly to look at 3 promising startups that can benefit either from your advice or cash as they seek advisors and angel investors (with a preference for HBS alum entrepreneurs seeking early stage rounds - so all you Harvard entrepreneurs please apply!). The format is simple > 15 minutes power point time & 15 min Q&A, with a 5 minute group general feedback summary per company (if you don't get cash, at least you get some great thoughts on your pitch and how to improve). Companies to be announced.
To be considered as a presenter, please email Tom Cervantez at tomcervantez@dwt.com your executive summary by November 10th. Organizer: Tom Cervantez '92 A Morning at KIPP Bayview Academy
KIPP Bayview Academy, one of the Harvard Club's partner schools for the Early College Awareness Program, has invited us to volunteer at one of their Saturday School sessions on December 8. Volunteers should arrive at 8:30am for a short orientation and will then work with students and on a project in the library from 9:00 to noon. That will include:
This is a great opportunity to get to know some hard-working students who you might see again, whether at ECAP in the spring or at another day of service with KBA. To learn more about KBA and its parent organization, the Knowledge is Power Program, read about them on the web at: www.kippbayview.org and www.kipp.org. The school is located in Bayview, one block from the T-Third MUNI line and immediately off highway 101. HCSF and HBSANC at the Opera: Madama Butterfly
San Francisco Opera is pleased to offer HCSF and HBSANC members and their guests the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for the most popular December performance of Madama Butterfly on Saturday, December 8 at 8 pm. A no-host cocktail reception will be available at 7:15 pm in the Opera House's North Box Bar, with short remarks by Opera management. Set in late 19th century Japan, Madama Butterfly is about a geisha who finds herself faced with a dreadful choice: life without dignity, or death with honor. Hear some of Puccini's most captivating music in this classic story of colliding hearts and cultures. Our very popular period production creates an alluring world, with a dynamic cast featuring soprano Marie Plette, whose previous portrayal of the heroine Cio-Cio-San was described by The New York Times as "a star turn." Madama Butterfly is returning for only 5 performances in the December schedule of San Francisco Opera. These special performances are not part of the opera's regular subscriber series, but the opera is so beloved by fans worldwide that is has been added to the season's schedule. To purchase tickets at the special 30% group discount, go to www.sfopera.com/offer and enter the promo code HARVARD8. Seats are available in the Orchestra, Grand Tier, Dress Circle and Balcony Circle to fit all ages and stages of opera goers, so do not hesitate. This will certainly be a sold out performance, so order early! Please email Barbara Keck at bkeck@mba1976.hbs.edu if you are planning to attend the reception so we can have your name tag ready for Club meet-and-greet purposes. HCSF Annual Holiday Reunion Cocktail Party

The Community Service Committee seeks to identify, develop, plan, sponsor, and coordinate impactful volunteer service activities and events that strengthen HCSF's capacity as a catalyst for positive change in the Bay Area. CSC encourages individual and group participation from all members of the Harvard Community so that they benefit from a sense of social involvment, human connectedness, achievement, and personal or professional enrichment. Our goal is to create opportunities for our Alumni to channel, nurture, and express some of the core values undergirding and defining the Harvard experience. Past Events
Preparing Lunches for the Homeless at Glide Memorial Church
Come together with other HCSF members at Glide Church in San Francisco to prepare brown bag lunches for the homeless. Glide serves more than a million meals a year and is the only program in town that provides three nutritious meals to the city's poor, homeless, and hungry every day of the year. It is also a highly spirited and diverse church. Bring your two hands for packing up lunches and your heart, ready to serve! For more info on Glide, visit www.glide.org Harvard – Yale Game
Co-sponsored by the Yale Club of San Francisco
Join your classmates, friends and Yalies at The Game, coming to us by satellite at the Elephant and Castle. Witness this long running rivalry and cheer on the Crimson in this annual clash. We will view the game via HD Satellite on multiple TV sets in this comfortable English style pub. In past years the Yalies have out numbered our graduates at this gathering - let's change this trend and turn out to out-number, out-cheer and out-sing the guys in blue as the Crimson outplays them in the stadium. Elephant & Castle offers full bar service along with breakfast & lunch selections. Your meal & drinks are not included in the admission fee and must be settled individually with the server. Questions may be directed to event coordinator Paul Toulmin at 415-553-2261 (days only) or ptoulmin@kqed.org. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. At the door member fee $10, non-member $15 by cash or check only. HCSF Annual Dinner
We are proud to announce the Harvard Club of San Francisco Annual Dinner, which promises to be one of the most exciting ever! The festivities will begin with a reception (no-host bar) at which you'll mingle, catch up with old friends, and meet new people. Ecological Effects of Global Warming with Prof. John Harte, AB '61 University of California, Berkeley Energy and Resources Group and Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management At dinner Kurt Bodden, AB '85, will regale us with his legendary Crimson Comedy. Kurt recently presented his comedic solo show, "Class Notes: True Tales from Harvard's Alumni Magazine" at the SF Fringe Festival. He hosts the monthly "Talk Show Live" at the historic Purple Onion in North Beach. Also a standup comic, he produced and hosted "Crimson Comedy," a sold-out evening with four Harvard comedians, for the Club last spring, and he's presenting them in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara in November. Kurt is a former member of the main company at BATS Improv and performed with his own improv troupe at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For ten years, he worked in architectural and product design -- actually using his Harvard degree (in Visual and Environmental Studies). See www.kurtbodden.com. Cap the evening with a drink with friends at the post-dinner celebration. Not to be missed! Hike - San Bruno Mountain State and County Park

SFJAZZ: Django Reinhardt Festival Band featuring Dorado Schmitt with Paquito D'Rivera
Gypsy guitar legend Django Reinhardt, perhaps considered Europe's first true jazz star, revolutionized the way guitarists interpret the instrument. His virtuosic style--especially noteworthy considering he had full use of only two left hand fingers--is still emulated today by "gypsy jazz" fans throughout the world. Join HCSF and SFJAZZ for an entertaining evening as guitar virtuoso Schmitt leads the swinging “gypsy jazz” group heard at the famed Django festival at NYC’s Birdland—joined, in this very special evening, by Grammy-winning clarinetist D’Rivera, "one of the premier reed stylists of the last 30 years with the swinging." For those that are new to "gypsy Jazz," Cory Combs, SFJAZZ Director of Education will lead a pre-show talk exclusively for the HCSF members. The talk will begin at 6pm and will include discussion about the significance of Django and the main stage artists, Dorado Schmitt and Paquito D'Rivera, both of whom will pay tribute the great Django Reinhardt during the performance to follow. PLEASE NOTE: the pre-show talk required a minimum ticket purchase by HCSF members. So, to guarantee the pre-show talk, please purchase your tickets for this event by Friday, October 12. To receive 15% off, please follow these steps:

Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to look at the alumni notes every time an issue of Harvard Magazine arrives. They've inspired comedian and HCSF member Kurt Bodden '85 to create this solo show around them. He takes you on a guided tour through actual notes: the impressive, the pretentious, and the just plain weird. Maybe you have reported that you've been named partner or published another book or given birth to the newest member of the Class of 2028 -- or maybe you're keeping a decidedly lower profile. Either way, you'll recognize yourself and other people in this show ... and laugh at both. Kurt Bodden to traded a career as in architectural and product design for acting and comedy. For the HCSF this spring, he produced and hosted the evening of Harvard standup comedians and the improv workshop. With his background in improv (Edinburgh Fringe, BATS Improv), standup, sketch comedy (Groundlings training), and hosting ("Talk Show Live"), Kurt makes the class notes hilarious -- especially if you've ever felt that you don't quite measure up. Kurt will hold a Q&A for HCSF members and their guests after this performance. He also will present "Class Notes" (without the special Q&A) on the following dates: Thursday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 pm For more information about the SF Fringe Festival, visit http://www.sffringe.org/ Opera in the Park with Stanford & Harvard alumni
Co-sponsored by the Stanford San Francisco Club.
Once again we will be having our annual Opera in the Park potluck picnic. Get a dose of culture at this annual San Francisco tradition as favorite stars from the 2007-08 Season perform operatic arias and ensembles accompanied by the acclaimed San Francisco Opera Orchestra. For those who have never been to the opera before, this is the perfect introduction (just don't think that you can wear shorts & t-shirts & lay down in the grass if you ever go to a performance at the Opera House!). Those of you who have joined us for Opera in the Park in previous years know how much fun it is to socialize with fellow alumni & friends outdoors munching on picnic items before enjoying the concert. Be ready to wave your "BRAVO" flyers and don't worry about your singing voice as everyone stands up & links arm to sing the grand finale! You are welcome to bring friends and family. Please RSVP in advance as we do need to know how many to expect so we can reserve enough space. BRING: a delectable potluck picnic item (enough for 5-10 people to sample -- don't forget a sharp knife or serving spoon if needed), water or alternate beverages, a blanket or a short/low chair (no full height chairs), sunscreen, hat, & clothing layers (from hot & sunny to foggy & chilly ocean breeze apparel), optional: small coolers with ice would be helpful. We will supply paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins and paper cups. IF YOU KNOW WHAT POTLUCK ITEM YOU WILL BE BRINGING, please indicate on the RSVP form. MEETING TIME: Please allow time for commuting and parking so you can arrive by noon. We will have a blanket out by 11:00am, so feel free to come earlier. Potluck picnic begins at 12:30pm, so we can chat before the 1:30 concert. Please be prompt as we cannot guarantee space with our group if you arrive after 12:30pm! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: a few volunteers are needed to arrive by 10am to reserve space. If you can be there at 10am with blankets, please RSVP at http://www.evite.com/app/publicUrl/widgets123@sbcglobal.net/opera FINDING THE GROUP: instructions for finding our group will be emailed to alumni who have RSVP'd before the deadline date of Sept 5 Salon Discussion VIII: Jessica Flannery, Founder of Kiva.org, Bankers to the Poor

"Date My Friend" Progressive Dinner for Singles ages 30s-40s
Are you a single professional in your 30s or 40s who would never be caught dead at a "singles event?" Well, this event is designed for great catches just like you! The focus of the evening is on great food, great friends, and great fun. The opportunity to "meet someone special" is, well, just icing on the cake! Here's how it works: sign up with a platonic friend of the opposite sex who you think could be a great catch for someone else (and who will say the same of you). Then arrive for dinner at YaYa's Mesopotamian-Californian Restaurant with a bottle of wine (one bottle per pair), and enjoy an exquisite four-course dinner with a small group of eligible singles in your age range. To give you the opportunities to meet and chat with everyone else, we'll change seats after each course. With a little strategizing, you'll have the chance to sit next to or in front of every person of the opposite sex at least once. The rest is up to you.... Need divine guidance? Stay after dessert and ask YaYa, chef and owner of the restaurant, to read your fortune from your Turkish coffee cup. So, join us for a fun evening and you might be surprised by your destiny in more ways than one! Join HCSF and Habitat for Humanity San Francisco (HHSF) as we field a team of volunteers to lend a hand to a dedicated group of San Francisco working families at the De Long Terrace Homes project. HHSF partners with working families and engages the community to build homeownership. HHSF is currently building twelve single-family homes on De Long Street in San Francisco's Outer Mission neighborhood. The homes are being constructed, in three phases, on surplus land purchased from Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) along the Daly City line. Architect John Schlesinger, A.I.A, has designed the homes to fit into the existing neighborhood. Like all Habitat for Humanity projects, each home will be built by Habitat volunteers and partner families. HHSF is also collaborating with another nonprofit, Hearth Homes, to construct three Universal Design homes in Phase II. Universal Design features accommodate the needs of residents with permanent mobility impairments. Specific Universal Design features on the Habitat homes include front entrance ramps, roll-in showers, lever door handles and a bedroom and living space on the first floor. HHSF's De Long Terrace homes will provide first-time homeownership for twelve working families earning 40-60 percent of San Francisco's median income. All Habitat partner families contribute "sweat equity" hours toward the construction of their own homes and will purchase their homes at cost and with interest-free mortgage loans.
